Highlights of the Spring 2011 HLSC Meeting Night Light Club 2011 Annual Convention Rushlight Club Fall 2011 Meeting
President
Tom Logan
Past President Joe Barton
The fall meeting was held in the Best Western Inn in Cornwall, Ontario. The Friday night hospitality room played host to a wonderful history lesson about the Cornwall locale. Jim Brownell, the President of the Lost Villages Historical Society, entertained us with a talk on the massive construction project that took place in the area during the 1950’s. Ontario Hydro, the Power Authority of the State of New York and the St. Lawrence Seaway Authority built several dams and a large power house which flooded thousands of acres. This created the head pond for the power house and controlled the flow of water out of Lake Ontario. Growing up on a farm which is now underwater, Jim’s enthusiastic talk about the people and villages that had to be moved to higher ground was very informative. In today’s world of CD’s and DVD’s it was unusual that Jim’s slide show was done by an old mechanical slide projector which worked well with Saturday’s speaker using a Magic Lantern. Saturday morning our members had the option to go see Ontario Power Generation’s new Information centre beside the R. H. Saunders generating station. Those who went to the centre were not disappointed. It is an interactive centre where the more buttons you push the more there is to see and learn about the construction of the power house. The movie “From Dream to Reality” added to the information we learned Friday night. Our host at the centre, Kevin Byam, opened the centre on a normally closed day for the HLSC members. He could not have been more hospitable, and thank you Kevin. Registration was taken care of by Dave Smuck, Ed Tonna, Jack Germa and Joan Leman. Thanks for making everything go smoothly. After lunch our President Tom Logan opened the meeting. The HLSC business was taken care of and our Treasurer Dave Smuck gave a year by year financial statement from the last seven years, which showed that our finances have not changed much over that time. Jay Kivell has the meetings for the next two years booked and things look like they are well organized for the future. The fall meeting for 2012 will be a joint meeting with the Rush Light Club, the Nightlight club and the HLSC. It will be in Dearborn Michigan next door to the Ford Museum. It promises to be a GOOD one. Thanks Bob Culver for getting it booked. Bev and Marilyn outdid themselves again with the door prizes. The winners were very happy with what their winnings. Cam Kenny showed the lamps on the Theme table which was a good representation of the era of the Swan Song of Kerosene Lighting. Cam also looked after the Show and Tell table, where HLSC members exhibited some interesting lamps. Our speaker Professor Lindsey Lambert gave a Magic Lantern presentation. The early Magic lantern was lighted by lime light or carbon arc lighting. We thought the projector used in Friday night’s meeting was old, but Lindsey’s lantern was the beginning of picture projection. Lindsay’s collection of antique slides and his presentation style was second to none. He was dressed up in period clothing and put his heart into his work which kept all in the room focused on the screen. By the way Lindsay also has a very good singing voice. WELL DONE Lindsey! The comments about the facility and food were nothing but positive. Well done Jay Kivell, and many thanks for all of your hard work. Just a reminder to the membership that the HLSC is looking for a replacement for Jay. All in all a really nice meeting. Members are already looking forward to the Spring Meeting at Midland. Particulars are shown on the Meetings page.
